# Disable variant preselection in Shopware 6 · Stone & Water > Shopware preselects a variant on variant products. On a variant product Shopware immediately shows one variant - even when a main variant is set in the admin. Customers who are not paying attention put the wrong size in the basket. The plugin reverses the order. Detail page ### No preselection When a variant product is opened, no option is preset. The customer makes the choice, not the shop. Buy button ### Appears after the choice While not all variant options are selected, a notice text takes the place of the buy form. Only with a complete selection does the normal buy view appear, with quantity field and add-to-basket button. Configurator ### Stays fully visible Only the buy form is replaced. The variant selection itself remains usable as before. Price ### Master price or none Until a variant is chosen you can either show the master product price or no price at all. Category listing ## The *master product* instead of a random variant. By default Shopware shows the preselected variant in listings. The plugin replaces it with the master product - in categories, in search results and in search suggestions. Listing ### One entry instead of variant clutter Several variants of the same product collapse into a single entry, the master product. The order of the listing is preserved. Search ### Search and suggestions too The same replacement applies to search results and to the suggestion dropdown. Click target ### Leads to the configurator A click lands on the detail page with the selection configurator, not on an arbitrarily preset variant. Optional ### Standard behaviour on request With the option disabled, listings fall back to normal Shopware behaviour with a preselected variant. Settings ## Four switches, *per sales channel*. The configuration lives in its own module under the Stone & Water plugin suite. Every option can be set separately per sales channel. Plugin active ### On or off Turns the selection requirement on the detail page off or on. Active by default. Show master price ### Price before the choice Shows the master product price while no variant is selected. Disabled, the price area stays empty. Master product in listing ### Listing behaviour Controls the replacement in categories, search and suggestions. Unlock direct links ### Entries from outside Controls whether opening a variant URL directly skips the selection requirement. Direct links ## From outside *straight to the buy view*. Someone arriving on a variant URL through an external link, a bookmark, a search engine or the address bar usually wants exactly that variant. There is a dedicated option for it. Entry from outside ### Buyable right away With the option active, a direct entry immediately shows the normal buy view with the variant preselected. Navigation inside the shop ### Requirement stays Anyone browsing within the shop still gets the selection configurator. This is detected via the referrer. Cache ### Fully cache safe The distinction happens in the browser, not in the server cache. Cached pages stay valid for every visitor. Under the hood ## Built to *work with caching*. A selection requirement that breaks the HTTP cache is worthless in practice. The plugin solves this with URL fragments and client-side unlocking. Cache ### Marker as URL fragment The buy view is rendered hidden and unlocked in the browser. The marker sits in the URL fragment and never reaches the server, so hosting proxies cannot strip it. Variant switch ### Through the Shopware core route Switching runs through the shop core route rather than a custom one. Less surface for errors, and the path is cached. URLs ### Real SEO URLs The switch URL is produced through the SeoUrlPlaceholderHandler, exactly as the core does it. Theme ### No theme:compile needed The logic runs inline in the template and is therefore independent of the theme build. Customisation ## Text and appearance *in your hands*. The notice text and the look of the notice box can be changed without a developer. Notice text ### Stored as a snippet The text lives as a snippet under the key `stawVariantSelectDirect.detail.selectVariantNotice` and is edited under Settings, Shop, Snippets. Custom CSS ### For the notice box The admin module has a field for custom CSS. The box carries the class `.staw-variant-gate-notice`. The CSS is only emitted on affected pages. Licence ### Direct licence via our platform The check runs against our licensing platform, with short caching and three days of grace should the server ever be unreachable. FAQ ## Variant preselection FAQ #### How do I disable variant preselection in Shopware 6? With the plugin no option is preselected on the product page, even if a main variant is set in the admin. Until all options are chosen, a notice replaces the buy form, and the configurator stays fully usable. #### What shows up in the category listing? The parent product instead of a preselected variant, in the listing, in search results and in search suggestions. Several variants of the same product are combined into one entry. #### Which price is shown before a choice is made? Optionally the price of the parent product. With the option off, no price appears until a choice is made, which can be more honest when variant prices differ a lot. #### What happens with direct links to a variant? Visitors arriving on a variant URL from a search engine, an external link or a bookmark see the buy view with that variant right away. Inside the shop the selection requirement stays, and the HTTP cache is not affected. #### Can I change the notice text? Yes, via the snippet stawVariantSelectDirect.detail.selectVariantNotice under Settings, Shop, Snippets. #### What does the plugin cost?
